Blaupunkt's "EXP" Extended Pole Program The "EXP" design incorporates a longer center magnetic pole piece, by one or two millimeters,
which lowers the distortion level and raises power handling. This concept has been used for some time in subwoofers, but had never been tried in smaller speakers because of the difficulties involved
and the possibility of upsetting the magnetic field balance.
By stretching the pole piece slightly, the length of the return path for magnetic flux is increased. This increases the distance of linear travel as well. This is normally not heard at lower listening levels, but at high levels, the coil remains under magnetic control, thus improving
distortion performance at these levels.
Higher Power Handling With the increased pole length, there is more metal inside the coil so it "wicks away" heat from the coil. This EXP design benefit typically adds 10-20% more power handling capacity, over a conventional pole design. Although this might seem small, 10-20% can often be the margin of safety for the life of a speaker. |
