Codem Tuners

Coincidence Demodulator

The Codem III High Dynamic Range tuner (and the latest upgrade, Codem IV-US) design provides an audible difference in frequency response and fidelity. What are the benefits of the Codem tuner?
  • Field Strength Dependent Volume Control
  • Frequency Response 35 to 15,000 Hz (Constant)
  • Multipath detection
  • Elimination of intermodulation and blocking

Field Strength Dependent Volume Control

Car radios require an antenna signal voltage of at least 70uV (micro volts) for stereo, compared to 7uV for mono reception. This is the reason why Blaupunkt Reception Graphcar radios have a gradual conversion to monophonic reception, rather that the industry standard cut-off point, at signal levels below 70uV. In this way interfering noise in the signal range between 70uV and 7uV is effectively eliminated. Reception is possible below 7uV, but the reception would be disturbed by strong noise if no counter measures were taken. The noise associated with the weaker input signal and boosted by the greater amplification required, is reduced by the application of the field strength volume control and amplitude limitation. This system dynamically monitors the noise levels and reduces or mutes the volume millisecond to millisecond, thus quieting the noise.

Frequency Response 35 to 15,000 Hz -3 dB (Constant)

Conventional tuner concepts only offer a frequency range of 35 to 15,000 Hz when the signal conditions are very good and drop to 35 to 3,500 Hz as signal strength becomes poor. HDR Chart Consequently, poor separation and reception problems can be covered up effectively, but high frequencies are lost. Use of the field strength dependent volume control, unique Multipath detection circuitry and a high dynamic range tuner technology, eliminates the need for conventional tuner high frequency attenuation. This allows Blaupunkt radios to maintain a constant 35 to 15,000 Hz frequency range down to signal loss.

Multipath Detection

Detection circuits monitor the signal for Multipath interference problems. The gradual sliding mono/stereo switchover is effective in eliminating shading. Shading is quite similar to ghosting on television reception. It is an overlapping of the same signal, that has reflected off multiple buildings, etc., and switching to mono, momentarily, stops the separation and reception is readjusted.
